Plaza 09
A Squid called Sebastian & Kiuw

The most famous basketball court in Ghent has received an impressive makeover with a stunning new floor painting. In co-creation with local youth, artists A Squid Called Sebastian and Kiuw brought the design to life, with support from Wallin’ throughout the process.

Alongside this artistic upgrade, Plaza09 was officially opened — a brand new Safe Space zone in the park where everyone can feel welcome and safe. Plaza09 stands as a symbol of inclusion, connection, and community, and together with the hypecourt it forms a place where sport, creativity, and togetherness reinforce each other.

The festive opening brought Ghent to life: 3x3 basketball tournaments, pick-up games, and live performances. The event perfectly showed how street art and sport can unite a neighborhood and give young people a platform.

A heartfelt thank you to all artists, youngsters, players, and partners who made this project possible.

In collaboration with vzw Jong, Ghent Basketball, Littekens vzw, and the City of Ghent.

About the
Artists

a Squid called Sebastian (BE)

A Squid Called Sebastian (ASCS) was born in America and came into contact with street art and graffiti at an early age. In 1989 he moved with his parents to Belgium, where he followed an artistic training. The focus was on comic strip drawing, which sparked a penchant for Japanese and oriental drawings. In his current work he combines and translates his drawings and studio work into images, often with organic and animal subjects. Characteristic for this artist are also the oriental inspired expressive masks, which are often part of his emotional and surrealistic world. His murals are full of symbolism where a story, personal or otherwise, is attached.

Kiuw (BE)

Kiuw grew up in a small town in West-Flanders. At the age of 14 he went to Ghent to study graphic design. He filled his days with watching cartoons, inventing useless stuff, smashing Nintendo games and getting into trouble. This served as inspiration for his weird but joyful illustrations. He loves creating characters, scènes and graphic elements. As dr Frankenstein might do, he lets them come alive through illustration, graffiti, animation, 3D-modelling, graphic design, game design & webdesign.

Planned For Demolition
