Pheasant — Han Coussement

During a participatory meeting with local residents, artist Han learned more about the Bergelen nature reserve, the new flower garden, and the rich flax-growing history of the region. Inspired by the local landscape of Wevelgem, he created a unique mural that reflects the character of the community.

As a passionate birdwatcher, Han chose to paint a pheasant, not only for its graceful shape and long tail that perfectly fit the wall’s horizontal space, but also to celebrate the joy of painting. The street art piece shows the pheasant hiding among tall grass, symbolizing the homely and natural atmosphere of the place. In the background, there’s a nod to the historic mill that once stood here.

A vibrant example of how public art connects people, nature, and local heritage.

About the
Artist

Han Coussement (BE)

The world of painting opened up to Han when he was arrested for graffiti. He had to find a way of working that did not involve fines and clean-up work. He found that freedom in the painting course.

Nowadays, he is engaged in exploring the interaction between painting on canvas and painting in the public space. He experiments with the different formats, the locations of a wall and the different techniques typical of graffiti and painting.

Abstract Session — How it all began

Abstract Sessions originated from a simple but bold question: what happens when you dedicate an entire wall to abstract art? Together with a diverse group of artists from across Europe, we brought colour, energy and experimentation together in a unique creative process.

Street art: the street belongs to everyone

Street art has long ceased to be merely "anti" or a paragon of anarchy. Today, thanks in part to this art form, the idea that public space belongs to everyone is alive.
